My Story

I suppose you could say I was destined to work with wood.

My maternal grandfather was a master craftsman who worked on the fine mahogany interiors of the RMS Queen Mary ocean liner on Clydebank in the 1930’s. These are considered one of the finest surviving examples of Art Deco design and his work can still be seen today.

My father was very practical and, at the age of 15, won first prize at school for a beautiful mahogany writing desk featuring Burr Walnut drawer fronts with Ebony knobs. However, his craftmanship took a different turn and he went on to become a dentist.

From my earliest school years, I wanted to be a woodworker and, needless to say, art, craft and design were my favourite subjects. Leaving school and starting an apprenticeship was paradise – I was spending every day doing what I’d always wanted to, being taught skills by my excellent employers, college lecturers and work mates, and being paid for it (albeit not very much, being an apprentice). In fact, I enjoyed myself so much that I usually had a personal project on the go which I would work on the minute we all stopped for tea (which I had to make) until it was time for me to wash the cups up and get back to work!

Having qualified with the City & Guilds Institute I continued with my employer for a while before branching out on my own, manufacturing bespoke fitted and freestanding furniture for commercial and domestic clients.

I find an immense satisfaction working with wood, crafting pieces and enjoying the smells and tactile qualities of different species, knowing that a job well done will provide many years of service.
